THE OUTSIDERSQuestion # 1:
Literature helps us to understand the character traits and motives of many different people. Some people are similar to us, and others are very different. Write a well developed paragraph in which you tell me which character in The Outsiders you are most like and why. You may choose any character, but you must make sure you connect to them in some real way. Answer #1: I believe that almost none of these characters are similar to me in any way, shape or form. There was one character though that struck me, and I felt like I was connected to her. This character was found late in the book, and is not at all one of the main characters in the book. Unfortunately she is only in a short portion of the book. This character is Cherry. I believe that she connects with me in various ways. I like this character a lot just because of her gender. This book is mostly centered around boys, and it was nice to see how the ladies acted at this time period. One important characteristic of Cherry that made me choose her was that she is a Soc. She was not at all stuck up or snooty when speaking with Ponyboy. I bet that Ponyboy wasn't expecting a long and open conversation when he first saw Cherry. I think that I connect to Cherry because she opens up to others, even when they are not her "kind." I think that I do that also. I will open up to any one if I can trust them. She was also kind to the "greasers," and wasn't trying to get them off her back. (except for Dally) She trusted them like they were ones of her "kind," instead of "outsiders." This is how I treat others also. I know that because my cousins are kind of outsiders. They aren't the richest of our family, but everyone still reaches out to them, and treats them like themselves. Cherry also defended them when the other Socs were rude. I would do this if I saw any one being teased by my own kind. Cherry also treats them like if they were her own kind, and she opens her heart to tell Ponyboy that money wasn't the main difference between them was that Socs are supposed to be sophisticated to the point where they feel nothing. She says that nothing is real with Socs. Everyone should be treated the same, and with dignity. I believe that everyone has the same rights as any one else does. One other thing that I love about Cherry is that she doesn't look or seem tough on the outside, but when she needs to she will defend herself, and also try to do it for the better of the others. When her "boyfriend" pulls up in his car she tries to stand up for the greasers and herself, thinking that it is fine for a Soc to hang out with a greaser. When she gets forced to ride with her boyfriend, she does obey him so that Ponyboy and the others wouldn't get tormented by the Socs. This is what I would do if I was in Cherry's situation. I respect Cherry so much because I love all of her characteristics. This is why I like Cherry so much and think that she relates to me.
